Tracking with Bloodhounds
One of Mugie’s standout initiatives is our Tracker Dog Unit, a dedicated team of two bloodhounds and their four skilled handlers. This unit plays a vital role in the protection of wildlife within Mugie and assists in addressing various community challenges, including stock thefts, missing persons cases, and other minor incidents.
About Our K-9 Unit
Based at Bravo 5, the heart of Mugie, our K-9 Unit operates with unwavering commitment. When not actively tracking in the field, the dogs undergo daily training and patrols, with Sundays reserved for rest and grooming. The impact of the K-9 Unit has been remarkable; wildlife-related crimes within the conservancy have plummeted to nearly zero. Their mere presence serves as a powerful deterrent against those with malicious intentions.
The unit’s community engagement has also been significant. With years of operation and the recovery of thousands of stolen livestock, coupled with the arrest of multiple offenders, the Tracker Dog Unit has fostered trust within the local communities. This collaboration has led to a noticeable decrease in petty crimes.
