Predator & Raptor
Monitoring Volunteer
Join Our Conservation Efforts
Mugie Conservancy is seeking passionate volunteers to support our Predator & Raptor Monitoring initiatives. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to vital conservation efforts while gaining hands-on experience in wildlife research and protection. Whether you’re a student, researcher, or conservation enthusiast, your time and skills can make a real impact in preserving Kenya’s rich biodiversity.
About Our Vulture Safe Feeding Site
Mugie Conservancy operates a vulture safe feeding site in collaboration with:
- Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS)
- Wildlife Research and Training Institute (WRTI)
- The Peregrine Fund
- Kenya Birds of Prey Trust
- National Geographic
Vultures are essential for maintaining ecosystem health by consuming carrion and preventing the spread of disease. Unfortunately, their populations are rapidly declining due to poisoning, habitat loss, and other threats. To combat this, Mugie has established a poison-free feeding site, ensuring safe sustenance for these remarkable birds. This pilot project also:
- Monitors the short-term effects on scavenger and predator populations.
- Engages local communities by providing financial benefits.
- Enhances the visitor experience, promoting sustainable tourism.
Our long-term goal is to establish a network of “vulture restaurants” across the northern Laikipia landscape, supporting biodiversity, empowering communities, and creating unforgettable experiences for visitors.
Collaborative Predator Research
Mugie is a key research hub, collaborating with international and local conservation organizations to protect Kenya’s apex predators. Our partnerships include:
- Lion Landscapes – Researching lion behavior and promoting coexistence with local communities.
- The Predator Project – Tracking predator movements to better understand their roles in the ecosystem.
- The Cheetah and Wild Dog Project – Monitoring cheetah and wild dog populations to aid in their conservation.
Through these projects, we work to mitigate human-wildlife conflict, ensuring that future generations can continue to experience the incredible wildlife of Mugie.
